Celebrating 50 Years of Ecology at the University of Georgia

The Whole is More Than the Sum of Its Parts: Gene Odum, Eniwetok, and the Enigma of Coral

Lecture by Prof. Emeritus Jim Porter, followed by an audience discussion that will segue from the talk to the broader topic of Georgia ’s role in the advancement of ecology. Reception will follow in the Exhibition Hallway. Open to all.

Martha Odum: Art Intersects Ecology

WHEN: Oct. 7 through Dec. 31, 2017
Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.; Sunday, 1:00–5:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays.

This exhibit pays tribute to artist Martha Odum, the wife of Odum School’s namesake and founder Eugene Odum. Writing in the introduction to a 1997 catalogue of Martha’s work published by the Georgia Museum of Art, Gene said, “Art and ecology have been a partnership in the Odum family for more than fifty years. Martha, in addition to being a gifted designer and craftsperson, was a landscape painter who was able to capture the ‘essence of place’ in her watercolors.”

Alumni Reunion and Symposium: The Past, Present and Future of Ecology at the University of Georgia

Odum Lecture: Iain Couzin, University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute for Ornithology

Iain Couzin, Chair of Biodiversity and Collective Behaviour, University of Konstanz, Germany and Director, Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, Department of Collective Behaviour, will deliver the 32nd annual Odum Lecture. Couzin’s work aims to reveal the fundamental principles that underlie evolved collective behavior, and consequently his research includes the study of a wide range of biological systems, from insect swarms to fish schools and primate groups.

Honoring the late Eugene P. Odum, founder of the Odum School of Ecology, the annual Eugene P. Odum Lecture Series features speakers addressing significant ecological questions in broad social and intellectual contexts.
